Japanese role-playing games JRPGs have hit a rough patch in recent years, and it's understandable why.
They've been largely refusing to move away from outdated game mechanisms such as far-apart save points and static presentation. While I enjoyed the game initially, I figured this was only due to the refreshing aura surrounding anything that wasn't the predictable action schlock I always seem to end up playing. As I continued on, I discovered something much more wonderful about the game: it's fantastic in its own right.
Now, I haven't played any of the other games in the series, so it should surprise no one that I didn't understand a whole lot of the lore.
From what I could gather, there are girls throughout the world of Ar Ciel called Reyvateils that communicate with the planet through song and clothing removal. One particular Reyvateil named Saki is being chased by the Clustanian army for some reason, and it's up to a steeplejack named Aoto to protect her.
While a story being difficult to understand may sound like a bad thing, it really isn't. The game fully knows that focusing on its characters is for the best because they're as enjoyable a group as can be found in any non- Lost Odyssey JRPG this generation.
The typical anime character types are here, including the energetic farm boy, the innocent apologetic girl, the disinterested emo boy, and the hot-headed tomboy. This might bother some people, but the characters are so shamelessly anime, I couldn't help but warm to them. Even without a strong story, the themes of heroism, humor, overcoming one's fears, and the lighter side of romance are all communicated well thanks in large part to a fantastic localization by NIS America.
To further explore what the characters are like, Ar Tonelico Qoga has a unique and clever way of exploring the Reyvateils' psyche. All of the major towns in the game have something called a dive shop that allows Aoto to "dive" into the mind of one of the girls. While in her mind, the player engages in several strange scenarios to help her overcome her inner demons.
It plays out with a very simple board game style of moving from one area to the next. There's no combat here, only going to places and watching cut-scenes. It's rare to see a JRPG offer optional content that actually has some weight to it, so diving is certainly a welcome feature. She then began singing a song. Ayatane just mocked her by telling that as long as the Rinkernator was open and the Tower was in suspended mode, she would be worthless as a Reyvateil, which Cocona dared him to prove true.
She then released the song. As for Aoto and the others, they managed to catch up with Finnel, and asked where she was going. Finnel answered that she couldn't wait anymore now that the other persona was trying to get out, and asked Aoto to kill her before she lost control and became unstoppable.
Aoto told her he would never be able to do that, and thus she ran away once again. Hikari Gojo and Aoto managed to catch a glimpse of her some floors below a few moments later, as she took the lift that led to the Slave District.
The party visited this place once again after getting word on Tyria being in the area, so they rushed to the Module Harvestasha to meet up with her. Sure enough, there she was, wondering why Harvestasha was shut down. Upon their arrival, Tyria greeted them, saying she was expecting their arrival. Katene immediately got excited to see that his holography techniques had been succesful, and wanted to interview Tyria for a while, to which she declined as she had more important things to do.
Aoto then told her that they already had learned that both Saki and Finnel were part of the Wills of Ar Ciel, while Hikari Gojo told her he now understood what she meant back then at the Rinkernator: she was talking about the Planet's regeneration.
Tyria joked that they won a trip around the world in a hot air balloon due to their correct guesses, to which Cocona chalked up to her talking gibberish again. Saki then chimed in, asking her how to start the Planet's regeneration, but she didn't know, as she had forgotten the song that was needed for that purpose. If she remembered it, she would remember as well how the project should proceed and be able to configurate the Tower for doing so.
Finnel then asked if she didn't remember any of the song, to which Tyria answered that she remembered the first part, and that it was the song she always sung inside the Tower, which Aoto recognized as the song that echoed in places like Tower Block A and the Lymph Ducts. Hikari Gojo guessed correctly that it was an Hymmnos Extract, and was surprised to hear that a such a song could be forgotten like this.
Tyria then explained that it was because the song was interrupted during its execution, which is what left the Tower incomplete.
She then asked him if they would be willing to help her, to which Katene excitedly replied that this was his lifelong mission. Cocona summarized everything as making Tyria remember the song, as Katene suggested going back to the VR21 and using it to analyze Tyria's Binary Field to make her remember the song.
For this purpose, he left the rest of the party and returned to Eternus Shaft in order to prepare the machine for this, telling the others that he would call them as soon as it was ready. Tyria then told the party that it was time to reboot Harvestasha and asked who was currently administrating the Tower, to which Akane replied it was her. Tyria then asked her for the reboot key, which left Akane confused, as she had never heard about it.
Tyria dumfoundedly asked her how she managed then to updat, repair or train Harvestasha, to which she replied that only Ayatane could control her aside of herself, and unfortunately she didn't know if he had the key or where he was at the moment. An alert sounded at that moment, telling everyone that Clustania's unmanned fighters and guardians were scrambling one after other, preparing to attack Archia and the Tower of Origin inside it.
Akane recognized this as Ayatane's handywork, as Aoto asked Cocona if she hadn't defeated him, to which she replied that she wasn't completely sure and that he could have escaped. Fearing the worst, the party decided to go to Archia while Akane tried to stop the guardians from causing trouble. At that moment, Saki noticed that Finnel seemed to be in pain, which was because the persona was trying to force her way out again, but she managed to supress her, at least for the moment.
Tyria then urged them to go to Archia, and she joined the party. Once they reached Module Harvestasha, Tyria told Aoto to prepare the boot key, and then she pronounced an Hymmnos Spell to reboot her. As soon as the reboot was completed, Tyria greeted Harvestasha like an old friend, while Harvestasha sarcastically called her "Ms.
Defective" and wondered how she could walk so normally. She then began making fun of the fact that Tyria was currently in a holography body, which prompted Tyria to ask who had customized her into "Shitframe" mode. However, at that moment, Harvestasha recognized Aoto and his party, and angry over the fact that Finnel forced her to shut down, disabling her DH Sensors and controllers, she sent a group of Guardians after them.
Tyria was already fed up with her, and thus pronounced other Hymmnos Spell to shut her down, to then inform the party that Harvestasha was broken because someone had fiddled with her programming, and unless they reprogrammed her, the Planet Regeneration Project would be impossible to accomplish. Saki asked if it was actually possible to modify her personality, to which Tyria answered that they would need to go to Ku in order to do it.
Aoto almost fainted when he heard that Ku was located at the very top of the Tower, and that they would need to climb through the Tower to reach that place, as no airships could reach that point due to the Blastline. Cocona then asked why they put Harvestasha's maintenance terminal in such a difficult-to-reach place, to which Tyria answered that if it wasn't done that way, it wouldn't be possible to perform maintenance on both of Harvestasha's cycles, which would render useless any reprogramming they did; and that the terminal was there due to security reasons.
Though from what you say it sounds like I'll probably need to make a lot more items and buy items etc cause I barely have any skills and only 1 super move so far Is this going to be more like Ar Tonelico 1 or 2 in terms of Diving?
I mean, is it going to be like 2 where if I choose to go deeper into one of their cosmospheres I won't be able to progress any further in the other's cosmosphere? Or is it going to be like 1 where I can dive all the way to the bottom in both of their cosmospheres? Just because I post doesn't mean I care about the topic. User Info: Nanila. Sparhawk posted You're not at the halfway mark for Phase 3 yet but when you reach the top of where you're trying to reach you'll be at the halfway mark.
If you have three hearts on a certain girl you can't progress past 7 on the other girl and if you hit level 8 with one girl she'll want to express herself to you where you get a final chance to choose her or not.
If you say yes you're locked out of the other girl's level 8 but if you say no you can do advance deeper in the other girl; however, if you do it that way you pretty much lock yourself out of the true endings This is what game designers like to call 'balanced gameplay' which roughly translates to 'you can have fun just as long as something's slightly irritating you. Or am I now locked out of true endings because I didn't give 1 girl all 3 hearts?
You can still get Saki's true end if you accept her confession in level 8 of her cosmosphere. However, you can't get any of Finnel's endings. Thank god for my 5 Save files. One final question: The ending where you choose to let Saki finish singing at the end of Phase 3 and the ending where you fail to defeat that boss in 7 minutes or less, are they the same ending? Or are they different endings as well? This is where the series gets its name: Ar tonelico is the name of that tower.
As well as humans, the tower is home to a race of human-like artificial beings named Reyvateils, who can communicate with the tower by singing songs to cast magic. The story starts in the city of Platina, during an outbreak of enemy creatures called Viruses. The protagonist, a Knight of Elemia named Lyner Barsett, goes to investigate with fellow knight Ayatane, and the tower administrator, Shurelia.
Unfortunately, they rapidly discover that the Viruses are able to turn intangible, rendering normal defeat impossible. Shurelia therefore sends Lyner on a quest for the only thing that can help them: the Hymn Crystal Purger. Taking an airship, he travels down to the Wings of Horus, the floating continent that surrounds the tower.
More accurately, he crashes thanks to an attack from a dragon, which complicates matters extremely. In the process of searching for the crystal and a way to repair his airship, he meets and teams up with a number of people, including two Reyvateils. First is the shy Aurica, who healed his injuries after his crash.
Second is the more outspoken Misha, actually his forgotten childhood friend. But there's one problem - Misha looks much younger than she should be. Aside from those two are the wanderer Jack, the local church knight Radolf, and the airship grathmelder Krusche. As the story progresses, Lyner and his comrades not only try to find the Hymn Crystal and fix Lyner's airship, but discover the reason for Misha's youthful appearance, and the source of the recent Virus outbreak.
